2026 Involvement Guide

“Action is the Antidote to Despair”

First things first: do not get overwhelmed and give up!
That is exactly what cynicism and authoritarian politics count on.

When the news cycle feels relentless and the stakes feel impossibly high, remember this truth:

Action is the antidote to despair.

You don’t need to do everything. You just need to do something. This guide is designed to help you find meaningful, concrete ways to plug in - at every level of involvement, from dipping a toe in to jumping all the way in.

If you’re feeling anxious, angry, or powerless, that’s not a failure - it’s a signal. Let’s turn that energy into action!

Become a State Delegate

State delegates help shape the direction of the Democratic Party in Indiana.

As a delegate, you:

  • Vote for statewide candidates (Secretary of State, etc.) and platform priorities

  • Help ensure Monroe County’s values are represented statewide

  • Build relationships with Democrats from across Indiana

  • Play a direct role in strengthening democracy from the inside

This is a powerful way to influence the structure of the party, not just individual races.

Eligibility Requirements:

- Must be in good standing with the Democratic Party and resident of Monroe County

- Must file to run for Delegate during the 2026 Primary Election filing period (January 7 - February 6 at NOON)

- Must be willing and able to attend the State Convention in person

To run for State Delegate, you must complete a CAN-37 form and submit it to the Election Office no later than February 6th at noon.

You can find the form here:
https://forms.in.gov/Download.aspx?id=9789

When completing the form, you’ll be asked whether you are running AT-LARGE or by DISTRICT. You should file based on your County Council District.

How else can I get involved?

  • Yes, you. Or someone you know.

Local and state offices shape our daily lives far more than most people realize. From schools to roads to housing to public safety, these positions matter deeply.

Offices Up for Election in 2026:

    • U.S. House of Representatives

    • Indiana State Senate

    • Indiana House of Representatives

    • County offices (such as Commissioner, Assessor, Recorder, Township Boards, Surveyor, Coroner, etc.)

    • Judicial offices (varies by year and court)

You do not need to be wealthy, well-connected, or a “political type” to run.
    You need:

    • A commitment to your community

    • A willingness to learn

    • The courage to try

The Monroe County Democratic Party can help you understand:

    • How to build a team so you’re never doing it alone

💡 Even exploring the idea helps strengthen our bench for future cycles.

  • Not ready to run? That’s okay! Campaigns run on people power.

Think about what issues matter to you:

    • Healthcare, climate change, the future of AI, foreign policy, environmental protections, etc.?
      → Support a congressional candidate

    • Public schools, infrastructure, reproductive rights, housing affordability, worker protections, etc.?
→ Support a state legislative candidate

    • Local services, zoning, public safety, community investment, etc.?
      → Support a county-level candidate

  • If you want to shape local policy without running for office, serving on a City of Bloomington board or commission is one of the most impactful ways to do it.

These boards and commissions are where much of the real, day-to-day work of local government happens. They review proposals, advise elected officials, and help guide decisions that directly affect how our city grows, spends money, and serves residents.

    Why This Matters

    Boards and Commissions:

    • Provide oversight and accountability

    • Bring community voices and expertise into government decisions

    • Shape recommendations on housing, transportation, public safety, climate, and more

This is where values become policy - and where informed, engaged residents make a real difference.
