I have decided to offer myself as a candidate for the Bloomington City Council, serving in the At-Large position recently held by Tim Mayer.
Like many important decisions, this has taken me some considerable time and reflection, but I wanted to let you know as soon as possible.
We are excited as a family about this opportunity and I don't take this decision lightly. Bloomington has been incredibly kind to us and this is truly a community like no other. Still, there is so much more to do and it's time for new faces to step forward and help. With my girls now a little older and the completion of my graduate work this summer, it's time for me to give back to a city that I am passionate about.
I take this challenge seriously. I will listen to every willing constituent within the confines of this community and treat them with the dignity and kindness they deserve from a public servant. I may come to your door from time-to-time and when I do, you can rest assured that I will be honest with you and I will work in service to you. If you have an opinion (and I am sure you will), I will hear it and if I can help, I will.
I still believe in a world of kind elected officials who genuinely care for their constituents.
I won't pretend to have all the answers to every problem, but I pledge to always seek credible sources who do. There is no question that we live in a community where addiction is more common than not and poverty wears many faces. That said, the challenges we have already experienced were pretty daunting, too. In the nine generations my family has been in this county, some of these devastating moments came in the form of plant closures accompanying much job loss, water shortages, and toxic PCBs that horrified residents and shook our trust in institutions.
Those moments in history still challenge us and are never easy. But we learned. And together we survive.
In the coming days, I look forward to talking with caucus voters, fellow candidates, and every one imaginable about the future of the biggest small town you will ever know and love. I begin this process with a happy heart and high hopes.
Here we go.
