MCDP to Vote on Resolution to Support IGWC-UE

BLOOMINGTON, Indiana — The Monroe County Democratic Party Central Committee will take a formal vote on a resolution to support the Indiana Graduate Workers Coalition-United Electrical Workers at its first quarterly meeting on April 23.

The IGWC-UE is leading a strike in response to the University’s refusal to recognize their union and allow them to collectively bargain for fair wages and conditions.

IU graduate workers are also Bloomingtonians, who struggle to live and work In our community like anyone else. In times of inflation and a lack of affordable housing, to be a graduate student in Bloomington has become a costly endeavor. Grad students are sadly counted among the working poor as a result. Grad students deserve the same rights and compensation to not just survive but thrive in our community.

“To be pro-Labor and a Democrat is to repeat ourselves,” said MCDP Chair David G. Henry. “Your Monroe County Democrats stand in solidarity. We see you and hear you.”

MCDP will consider in its resolutions additional support to the graduate students in collaboration with Labor leaders and partners throughout southern Indiana.

The MCDP central committee’s first quarterly meeting will be held at 11:30 AM on April 23 in the Monroe County Courthouse Nat U. Hill Meeting Room, and is open to precinct committee members. A more formal announcement to the central committee is forthcoming.
