Eric Schmitz - County Recorder

Dear Monroe County,

For the past three years, it has been my pleasure and honor to serve as your County Recorder. I have less than one year remaining in the term to which I was elected, and I am committed to finishing this term with all the dedication that I believe I have put into this position for the past three years.

During my time in office, we have helped to continue the project of establishing the Jim Fielder Memorial Archives. We have begun offering the service of electronically accepting and recording documents, including no-cost recording of military discharge forms. We have helped to reduce the enormous volume of the County’s old paper records by revitalizing the Local Records Commission, helping all county departments efficiently manage their older records. By popular request we have hosted educational forums for our own and surrounding counties to help in this initiative. The response to these efforts has been overwhelmingly positive.

We have added new layers of security and data protection to our processes, to better guarantee the dependability of our custodianship of your property records. And we have expanded our efforts to make records as easily accessible to the public as possible, through digitization and online access, all the while maintaining the privacy required by law, as well as by good ethical standards.

For my own part, I have been an active and enthusiastic member of the Indiana Recorders Association, serving first as a member of the Education and Technology Committees, and now as the chair of both. We recently published the first "Getting Started Guide" for newly elected Recorders. As chair of that committee, and with the cooperation of the members of the Legislative Committee, we are pleased to soon release a revision of the Association’s "Recording Manual and Desktop Reference." I built and maintain the website, where these and many other resources can be found. All of it has been a true labor of love, and I will always be grateful for this experience.

After long and careful consideration, I have concluded that, for the sake of the citizens of Monroe County, I simply cannot forgo the opportunity to continue the work that I and my team have taken on. For this reason, I am formally announcing my decision to place my name on the ballot for a second term as your Recorder.

I humbly ask for your support, and I promise to be worthy of it.

Most sincerely,

-Eric Schmitz, Monroe County Recorder
