Democrats set caucus to fill auditor job and party position

The Monroe County Democratic Party will select replacements for county auditor and party secretary in a July 28 caucus at the Monroe County Public Library.

The caucus will begin at 5 p.m. in the library’s auditorium. Candidates interested in either of the positions have until 72 hours before the caucus to file with the party chairman.

The two vacancies are both due to resignations from office. During a county council work session on June 28, county Auditor Steve Saulter announced he is leaving office on July 15. That date has since been moved up to today, Saulter said, after discussions on how his Social Security will work.

“We thank Steve for his service and wish him the best in retirement,” county Democratic Party Chairman Mark Fraley said in an email.

The race for the next auditor currently has three persons on the ballot in November: Democratic nominee and current Monroe County Treasurer Cathy Smith, Republican candidate Ann Boehm and Chief Deputy Auditor Therese Chambers, who is running as an independent.

Party secretary Alexa Lopez also announced her resignation, after accepting a position in Washington, D.C.

“We are grateful for Alexa’s 10 years of service to MCDP and wish her the best of success in her new position,” Fraley said.
