Mike Szakaly

For Office:
Monroe County Recorder

Mike Szakaly announced his candidacy as the Democratic nominee for Monroe County Recorder, the office responsible for maintaining public records from real estate documents to military discharge papers. He currently serves as Chief Deputy Recorder in that office.

Incumbent Recorder Sam Allison, who is not seeking re-election, offered praise for his Chief Deputy’s performance saying, “Mike has been instrumental to the success of the office because he is dedicated to making the office work for the public. His academic, professional, and government background make him ideally qualified for this post.”

Szakaly thanked Allison for the opportunity to serve the public. “It has been my privilege to find new ways to do old things. I look forward to continuing the progress towards a more efficient, more collaborative office.”

He cited major improvements to the office as examples of the accomplishments Allison and he have achieved, noting, “We did more to advance document accessibility and archiving in the last three years than in the previous decade. We doubled the number of documents immediately accessible by computer, doubled the public workspace, doubled the number of public terminals, and we did it all while simultaneously saving the taxpayers thousands of dollars. Additionally, for the first time in nearly 200 years, we have reliable backups for some of the most important records in our community's heritage.”

When asked about his plans for the office, Szakaly referenced the roadmap he helped put in place. “We want to cut the average document processing time from 24 hours to 24 seconds. We also expect to double, yet again, the number of digital documents.”

Szakaly is a graduate of Indiana University’s Kelley School of Business in Bloomington. Previously, he was Assistant Vice President at Bank One (now Chase) and a commercial real estate appraiser, spending the last twenty years in the legal and lending environment that generates the very type of documents that are archived in the recorder’s office.

His community involvement extends beyond the courthouse. As a 5-year member of the Bloomington Redevelopment Commission, he helps to invest millions of dollars on projects such as the B-Line Trail, low-income housing, and other major initiatives. He also held executive positions on the boards of directors for Stepping Stones and The Latino Community Center, and he volunteers for PALS, the animal shelter, and Lotus. He has been involved in Leadership Bloomington/Monroe County, the City of Bloomington’s Citizens Academy, and has been a coach for Girl’s Inc. He is a lifelong Hoosier and a 20-year resident of Monroe County, where he lives with his wife, Veronica, and daughter, Maya.
