Herald Times - Primary voters head to the polls today

From a seat in Congress to one on a rural township board, Tuesday’s primary election ballot covers a wide range of candidates seeking their party’s nomination for a November chance to represent Monroe County residents starting next year.

Monroe County Democratic Chairman Mark Fraley said that up and down the ticket are potential officials whose future decisions could impact residents’ daily lives.

“About every aspect of our community is being touched by these elections,” Fraley said.

So he and Monroe County Republican Party Chairman William Ellis encourage all eligible voters to cast a ballot in Tuesday’s primary election. Some voters have already taken advantage of an early voting option, which ended at noon Monday, rather than wait for Election Day.

More than 5,000 people walked through Monroe County Election Central’s doors during the past month to cast votes in the primary election before precinct polls open for Election Day. That’s about 5.5 percent of the county’s estimated 91,000 registered voters.

“I am actually quite surprised,” Ellis said.

While turnout during midterms is generally lower than other election years, Ellis said increased political interest this year should have translated into a greater showing. Along with the 5,036 people who voted early in person, about 500 cast ballots early by either mail or travel board.

During the 2014 primary election, 5,549 of 104,195 eligible registered voters opted to cast ballots early in person, according to county voting data. In addition, the number of residents opting to vote early by either mail or travel board was 1,803.

Nonetheless, Ellis said, Election Day turnout will show the true interest level.

Voters will visit their precinct polling location between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday. Voters unsure of their polling site can go to indianavoters.com or call the voters’ registration office at 812-349-2690 for assistance.

Voters must choose either a Democratic or Republican ballot. Because Indiana has an open primary, the voter does not need to be registered with that party. Registered voters must provide valid identification, such as an Indiana driver’s license, military ID, passport, student ID from an Indiana state school that meets the state’s ID criteria or an Indiana photo ID, in order to vote.
