Democrats Launch Door to Door “Listening Tour”
Volunteers for “Your Voice Matters” campaign will canvass neighborhoods to hear voters’ concerns
Bloomington – With no elections in 2017, there are no candidates to promote or races to win. However, Democrats will be going door to door to lend an ear to voters who want to express concerns about local, state, and national issues. Volunteers for the Monroe County Democratic Party’s “Your Voice Matters” campaign will reach out to members of their community to ask “What do you want from your government?”
“It’s clear that people feel disconnected from the decisions made by people in political office,” said Mark Fraley, chairman of the Monroe County Democratic Party. “We don’t claim to have all the answers, but we want to listen to our neighbor’s concerns.”
Democrats will organize mass canvasses on the second Saturday of every month, starting on June 10th, where volunteers will assemble at 1pm at Bryan Park before setting out to canvass in various neighborhoods in Monroe County. Volunteers will help to register voters and communicate concerns to local policy makers.
“When people have concerns about sidewalks, street repairs, or other local issues, we can put them directly in touch with their city or county representatives”, said Julie Thomas, Monroe County Commissioner and one of the project’s organizers. “We have a real opportunity to improve people’s lives just by listening”.
“It’s really about restoring trust,” said Penny Githens, an organizer for the campaign. “We need to rebuild our shared sense of civic responsibility. That is only going to happen if we engage our local communities and listen effectively.”
